Which is one is better? Happiness vs. Success

Today I was sitting and thinking about both the Success and Happiness. I am 36 years old and at this stage, mostly like other people I also think about success in life. Like how can I start a successful business? How can I earn more money? How to move to another career that has better financial resources? Every human has different needs as explained by the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.  If you have read Maslow’s theory, there are 5 types of different needs, and which are fulfilled one after another as a person strives in life. At the age of 36, a person has fulfilled basic physiological needs, social needs and now looking at fulfilling esteem needs, to be more successful in life, to recognize by others.

However, during my above reflections, a realization originated in mind – only fixating on success, while neglecting the pursuit of happiness, is a flawed approach. While success may manifest in various forms, the essence of happiness often gets overshadowed. We should think and plan about happiness in current resources, only looking forward for the success and neglecting the current state will bring boredom and sense of incompleteness in one life.

Prioritizing Happiness along side Success

It’s crucial to have a balance between aspiration for success and happiness within our current circumstances. Focusing solely on future endeavors/struggles can lead to a sense of detachment from the present, fostering feelings of apathy and an underlying sense of incompleteness.

Acknowledging the Present

Whether you’re a student, an entrepreneur, or pursuing any endeavor, it’s imperative not to overlook the significance of evaluating your current state. Merely fixating on future achievements can diminish the value derived from your present experiences.

Here are some strategies to incorporate happiness into your journey:

1. Practicing Mindfulness: Cultivate awareness of the present moment, allowing yourself to fully engage with your surroundings and experiences. Mindfulness fosters a deeper appreciation for life’s simple pleasures and enhances overall well-being.

Assignment: Search about different mindful techniques to bring value in your life.

2. Celebrating Milestones: Rather than solely focusing on distant goals, take time to acknowledge and reward yourself for the progress made along the way. Celebrating small victories strengthens a sense of accomplishment and motivation.

3. Cultivating Gratitude: Develop an attitude of gratitude towards yourself and those around you. Reflecting on the positive aspects of your life encourages a sense of fulfillment and cultivates resilience in the face of challenges.

By interlinking the pursuit of success with the cultivation of happiness, individuals can lead more satisfying and balanced lives. Remember, true prosperity encompasses not only external achievements but also inner satisfaction and joy derived from the journey itself.
