9 GTO Individual Obstacles in ISSB: Step by Step Guide

Are you preparing for the 9 GTO individual Obstacles in ISSB?

This post will help you in

  • understanding obstacles
  • How to perform during obstacles
  • Grading criteria

All the candidates of a GTO group will wait in the waiting area. Candidates will be called one by one and chest number-wise. The time for obstacles is 2 minutes. These are called Individual obstacles because everyone has to perform individually. This is not a group task.

In the individual obstacles, ISSB checks your Physical Fitness. Do you read the 8 Qualities ISSB try to find in a Candidate. If not, please click on the link.

Point to Remember:

Perform the easy obstacle first. This will boost your confidence and save you time. A small amount of time will be given, so you can see all the obstacles. You have to make the assessment, which one is easy for you.

Location of the obstacles

ISSB candidate will stand in the center. All 9 obstacles are placed in a circle. Obstacle time starts with Whistling.

Here, All obstacles are stated from easy to hard.

1. Long Jump over a Dig

This one is very easy. You have to jump over a dig. You have to focus on Long Jump. Do not focus on Dig. The total points for this obstacle are 4.

Practice required:

  • Long Jumping
  • You can perform at home very easily

2. High jump obstacle

This one is easy if you have a good height. If you have a smaller height, practice it more. It is a simple to jump over a Bar of 3 to 4 feet.

Practice Required: High Jumping

3. Multiple up-down obstacle

This obstacle is easy and you can perform this obstacle even without any practice.

There are total of 3 steps.

  • Jumping over a 3 feet Rope
  • Passing underneath a Rope
  • Then again jump over 3 feet rope

4. Tire obstacle

This obstacle is also very easy, you can perform it without any practice. You can see in the below picture. There is no foul in this obstacle.

5. Zigzag run

This is not an easy obstacle for everyone. If you have a Height phobia, Then you might have a problem performing this task. In this obstacle, One has to Walk speedily on 1.5 feet wide and 4 to 6 feet high wooden planks. If you have a good balance, then it is not a difficult task.

Practice Required:

  • Walk over pipes available in your streets.
  • focus on path not on height

6. Hanging bridge

This obstacle is tricky. You have to pass hanging bright (WOODEN TAKHTA) without touching the ropes. If you touch it, it will be a foul. You can not walk over the Plank (Takhta), you have to run. Walking is not authorized.

Tips: Complete this obstacle with just one step and Jump. Balance in this obstacle is the main thing. If you have good balance, Then you will not touch the ropes. Use your foot, which is balancing, and can control the whole body weight. I have a good balance on Right foot. So for me, the Right foot is good. Determine your own foot, which one is balancing for you.

7. Tarzan swing

It is the most interesting Obstacle in the ISSB. If you have good height, you can perform it very easily. A help will give you the hanging side of a rope. You have to hold and move to the other side. Hold your weight with rope and You will swing easily to the other side. It is an easy obstacle for tall people.

8. Monkey Bridge

In this obstacle, you have to cross the bridge which is made of ropes. It is an easy obstacle if you don’t fear height. However it is a lengthy obstacle than other. I will not recommend starting from this obstacle. perform it in Last, if you have enough time. In the below picture, Arrows shows the moving direction. You will climb through a stair. holding the upper rope with hands and walking on the lower rope. After reaching the end, you will come through a hanging rope (Shown on the right side in the picture). It has 7 points.

9. Rope climbing

This is the toughest obstacle if you have no practice. If you have to practice climbing a tree, then it is an easy obstacle. All you have to climb the rope, change the side, and then coming down. It has the greatest points 11. Candidates from cadet colleges, first complete all the obstacles and then perform this obstacle at the end. if they have time, they repeat it and earn greater points.
