Self-reflection is a powerful tool for personal growth. Understanding one own self is not easy and it is a challenging task, and plays an important role in personal grooming.

What is a Merit?

What is the Merit? It is your strength or positive aspects of your personality. A human has both, strengths and weaknesses. The merit of a person means he has a specific strength as a part of his personality. A Merit is a noun and claim to respect and praise; excellence; or worth. Merit is something that deserves or justifies a reward or commendation; a commendable quality, an act, etc. For example: Mr. A is an honest boy. The word honest denotes the merit of Mr. A.

What is a De-merit?

On the other hand, A Demerit is a weakness or a negative aspect of the human personality. The demerits indicate that the person has some specific weaknesses. It is natural. Every human has some weaknesses and they differ from human to human.

Merits and Demerits are your good and bad qualities. It should prove your personality and will be examined by a behavior analyst or psychologist in a conversation.

We are going to give you some examples of merits and demerits. First of all, you should read all that comes to your mind. You can then match these with your personality, and If you face difficulty then you can get help from your friend. Ask your friend who is mature and keen on observation.

Merits and Demerits writing in ISSB

Make a list of human strengths and weaknesses that can belong to any person. You can choose the merits and demerits which are more suitable matching to your personality.

I will request all the aspirants to please, DO NOT copy those that are not matched by your personality. If you will write the merits which are NOT present in your personality, you will be caught red-handed by the Psychologist.

Merits Examples For the ISSB

Following are some examples of the Merits of a person. These are some examples and there could be a longer list than this. If you have good examples in mind, then please share them with us in the comments.

  • Organized (a person who is organized is well dressed, work on time, and unlike mismanagement)
  • Helping (Having attitude towards other people to help them without any reward)
  • Co-operative (Accepting others and respecting their decisions)
  • Hardworking (Consistent effort to achieve goals)
  • Honest (Doing good without any hidden motives and telling the truth)
  • Responsible (Doing any task whichever one should be liable to do)
  • Faithfulness (Having faith in oneself and God)
  • Confident (Belief in your abilities )
  • Flexible (Not sticking to only one point of view and listening to others as well)
  • Kind (Being polite with others)
  • Humorous (Taking things lightly with a positive mood)
  • Courageous (Accepting challenges and facing the difficulty willingly)
  • Good Manners
  • Optimistic (Seeing the bright side and hopeful about the future)
  • Cool Minded (Not showing aggression and remaining calm in stressful situations)
  • Punctual (Doing things on time)
  • Sincere (Not thinking bad for others)
  • Patriot (Loving your own country without any reward)
  • Social (Connecting with others and making friends easily)
  • Religious (having faith in religious beliefs and observing the religious events properly)
  • Aggressive (Being reactive and not holding breath to wait for others)

Note: Please don’t write a merit that is hardly defensible. For example, a person writes BRAVERY as a merit. Calling oneself brave is unwanted and the Interviewer will must ask about your bravery.

Demerits Examples For the ISSB

Following are some examples of the demerits of a person. This list is short and if we write all the demerits there could be a longer list. Please make your list of demerits.

  • Bookish or bookworm (Some people write this a Demerit, but it gives a positive signal. However It might be difficult to defend in the interview If one is not in actual)
  • Laptop worm (excessive use of computers, The Interviewer will ask about your computer skills and Your projects if any)
  • Excessive use of mobile (Related Interview question is, what do you watch or What type of mobile use?)
  • Weak in English (This is evident from the written tests, and Generally interviewer will not ask about the reason)
  • Low confidence (No interview question, as the Interviewer will judge himself, an observable quality)
  • Sleep Late (A related question is what do you do if you try to sleep late? Are you engaged in positive activities or something others)
  • Not interested in studying (Means not willing to grow in life, If you have written this, you are not creating a good impression)
  • Naughty (Acceptable trait)
  • Speak Loudly (acceptable and leaders always speak loud)
  • Shy (Not a desirable trait, but acceptable for mathematicians, poet, and introverts type of professions)
  • Sensitive (Not suitable for military)
  • Rush (Not suitable especially for aviation fields)
  • Smokers (Not desirable for public sector jobs)
  • Talkative (It’s OK)
  • Use Mobile Too Much (Already discussed above)
  • Having Weak General knowledge (Observable trait and interviewer can assess you for this)
  • Too much aggressive (Not desirable)

Helpful tips for writing your strengths and weaknesses

Please, Be original; Write your own strengths and weaknesses that apply to you and reflect your personality. If you write someone other qualities, then you will be unable to defend it. You are requested to please, Find and Write that other people can see and testify about you as you will be evaluated by a psychologist.

Try to choose 5 merits and 5 demerits from the above list or the list you made.
